Spyro

Spyro

My first review shall be the character Spyro, seeing as he's supposed to be the main character in the first game and is subsequently my fave.

Spyro is awesome, he looks awesome, his moves are awesome and he is the big kahuna, unless you were born before the year of 2000 (as I am) and remember the days before skylanders was popular. If thats the case then you (as I) will know that the original spyro series for PS one is way way better. In fact I strongly believe that skylanders is just a mash of those originals and the later "legend of Spyro" series, but we'll get to that another time.

With all that in mind its not that I'm saying this Spyro isn't awesome in his own right. Spyro is a rare and mystical purple dragon from a far off land. Master Eon (the dude with the beard who narrates everything and doesn't know when to shut up) apparently summoned him to join the skylanders due to his legendary stories of heroism (clear link/note of original games there).

Versions

There has been 8 versions of the Spyro character.

Series 1 - Skylanders Spyro's Adventure

  • Spyro
  • Dark Spyro
  • Legendary Spyro

Series 2 - Skylanders Giants
  • Spyro (series 2) - With wing bracers

Series 3 - Skylanders Swap Force
  • Mega Ram Spyro
  • Dark Mega Ram Spyro

Series 4 - Skylanders Trap Team
  • Spry -Mini Spyro
  • Eons Spyro - special, only now available in UK

Moves

Spyro has 2 main weapons, his horns and his fire breath.
In the skylanders games, you can upgrade your character using in game money after a certain amount of upgrading you must choose a "path" which allows you to either upgrade the horns or the fire breath.

As I own more than one Spyro figure, I have been able to try out both paths, personally I prefer to upgrade the fire breath as it's a range attack, which I find to be the better option for this character as it's defence is quite low, therefore I can attack without getting too close to the enemies

However, my series 3 Mega Ram figure has been trained along the horn upgrade path as I thought this was more suited to the style of the figure.

Opinions

As much as I love Spyro, I can't help but feel that he is a little let down by the series, He is one of two characters with any backstory and I feel that maybe Activision is missing out on a treat by not including any real elements of this popular characters past. His strength is a little higher than average and he is fun to play as, but I need a little more than nostalgia to really feel like he is appreciated in this series.

Naturally I know this series is supposed to be for children but who says adults can't have fun with it too?!?
